Control Plan with omission of dimensional data

What is everybodies thoughts on a control plan that doesn't have any variable data. Also, doesn't even state the feature. The on floor check sheets have a few dimensions and the remainder is checked on the CMM annually (Which is also not on the Control Plan)

I am expecting to see all print dimensions on the control plan.

Thoughts?

The information shown on the control plan should be driven by the PFMEA. In most cases it's absolutely unnecessary to list all of the print dimensions on the control plan.

PFMEA is very weak also...

I always thought of the control plan as the document to list ALL of the inspections that happen... I mean it's how the process is controlled (documented through the control plan)...

How do I know feature X is being check? Where is it being the checked? The control plan should tell me... If the control plan doesn't say then I am on a goose chase to look for what line side check or CMM check that feature X is being checked.

The control plan should indicate what is being controlled and therefore checked. But not all dimensions need to be controlled and/or checked. The floor check sheets and the control plan should match. The control plan indicating what is checked and the check sheet providing the record of the check.

Thanks for your response. So at a minimum the control plan and the floor check sheets should match? So it needs to be corrected if the floor check sheets have inspections but the control plan does not have these dimensions...

What about missing features? How will they be captured? Supplier says "Annual PPAP" but it's uncontrolled... I am guessing this is a full layout down annually...

We put all our 'floor checks' on the control plan. The gage sheet used by the operators is driven by the control plan and they match.

But we do something on our Receiving Inspection Control Plans(RICP) that I think might help you. We will put a line on the RICP that states to check on the cmm. This line doesn't have any variable data on it. But we make a separate cmm inspection standard and the RICP references that.

We can check up to 400 dimensions on the cmm for some parts. As you could imagine, inputting 400 dims on the control plan would be big pain. We can use the cmm output to automatically create the 'cmm inspection standard' which saves a ton of typing and lowers the risk of fat fingering.

Some of this will depend on if you're working to the automotive requirements or other requirements. Auto requires a lot more detail. There really aren't "missing features" on a control plan for production. Producer should review the product and control those features that are required to be controlled -- it is usually less than 100% of the dimensions. If they do an annual PPAP/Layout, I think that can be covered elsewhere. Or maybe a line on the control plan indicating the annual ppap. It's kind of up to them.
