It seems to me that the company may have felt "burned" a little, because she had the contract for a few months before she canceled it, and never delivered anything. She didn't bill them of course, but now the project time line is considerably shorter, and nothing's been done.

Sorry to hear that - that's neither professional nor even fair to the company. I'd feel burned if I were them too. Forget billing - it shortened their timeline which makes things harder for them. Sigh. I do wish consultants wouldn't do things like that - it makes things a bit harder for those of us who wouldn't and don't.
