I don't know if this has been a thread before but I thought it would be interesting to have us explain our names here in the cove.....

Mine is my last name. Not creative but everyone calls me by my last name ever since I was a teenager.

Funny story:

I used to play sandlot football in my early 20's. My future wife had dropped off some friends for the weekly game. One of the guys there asked where I (Palmer) was. She told him I was staying home to watch football. He said he would call me and asked her what my last name was?????.......

That's how much everyone called me by my last name....

Re: What is the meaning of your Cove name?

Parents named me Marc, supposedly after the doctor who delivered me. I never did get an explaination of where my middle name (Timothy) came from. I don't remember ever asking, though. I was probably told at some time in my life but I don't remember. People either called me Marc or Smitty, and still do.

Family name on my father's side (Smith) was from an illegal immigrant (as I understand it) who changed his name to Smith from Gottschaulk so he couldn't be found.

On my mother's side (Perry) they have a long history which includes Commodore Perry in the lineage and quite a few 'colourful' people, including a couple professional gamblers and a couple of alcoholics.

In French, le chiffre means "the figure" (i.e. "the number") or "the cipher." ... and I thought of it before the film Casino Royale came out and I hadn't read the novel.

I guess I'm in the "anonymous" poster camp - thought it was easier to openly discuss corporate dysfunctions without fear of reprisal.

My name Wikipedia reference-linkAl Rosen speaks for itself.

I met Al Rosen once sometime around 1953. My Uncle Ralph Widman was a part time scout for the Cleveland Indians for a while. I still have a picture of me at the Cleveland Indians Stadium in 1953, I was 10 at the time.
Al Rosen looked like a giant to me at the time, but he was very nice to the kids.

I was named after my Uncle Ralph, and the Sulsers were from Baden, Germany going back to Steven Sulser in the 1760s. My GG Grandfather Jacob Sulser was born there in 1835 and it was said he was the illigetimate son of the Grand Duke of Baden. He later went to NYC in 1845 with his mother. They then went to Marion County Ohio where he was a farmer and carpenter. He served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865. Was wounded 3 times. He was with Gen. Sherman in Atlanta and the "March to the Sea".
He built his house , barn and a church. I visited the place in 1997 and got to hold his musket and go through his tools still there in his tool boxes.

Re: What is the meaning of your Cove name?

Kevin - my legal 1st name. H - the first letter of my surname, which is Haffey, of Irish extraction. There were Haffeys in Pittsburgh in the 1790's. Of course, they were3 predated a little bit by the Clears ( my mother's name) and the Bevington's (Dad's Mother's name) who received Rev. War land grants in Beaver County. BTW, Clear is German, not English :) Named Kevin because mom & Dad liked the name. I'm not aware of any Kevins before my generation. Great grandpa Haffey served in one of the PA regiments in the "Civil War" aka as "The War Between the States" retired to melt steel and then farm in western PA. My grandfather was his youngest son. I'm not entirely certain what the Clears and Bevingtons were doing during that time. The only gun of great grandpa's I'm aware of is his deer rifle - a trapdoor Springfield in 45-70. I have it since dad passed away, but haven't found time to fire it yet.

Re: What is the meaning of your Cove name?

Like many of us here, I have chosen to use my real name. I have always considered the Cove to be a 'professional' resource, and as such, I didn't feel it would be appropriate to use one of the more colorful aliases that I have assumed over the years. (Actually, I only really have 4 aliases that I have used since joining the BBS/computer revolution so many years ago).
