IATF 16949 Scope - Producing multiple products

According the new introduced standard, is it a certification of the QMS system or only the products that the certified organization supplies to automotive market?
The question is related to the fact that an organization can produce multiple products but not all of the them are automotive oriented. Said that, if there are no customer requirements in this sense, could the ISO 9001 certification cover QMS and IATF 16949 only for the automotive production portion related?

Sidney will know, but my experience was you could limit the scope of a registration to specific produce lines.

The approach remains always a grey area...Some trainers on new IATF standard say that it is a certification system for the whole QMS of an organization, both for automotive and non automotive products.

The certification will be for overall QMS.

Unless there is a permanent barrier (such as a wall) between automotive and non-automotive production lines, non-automotive production lines cannot be removed from the scope of IATF16949.

This is the requirement from IATF 4th edition rules. And don't think it's changed in 5th edition rules.

The IATF has never been interested in commercial product. IATF auditors are trained to audit the entire QMS only as it relates to automotive product. When sampling they are told to only choose automotive-related samples and avoid commercial samples.

You can have an ISO 9001 certificate that covers the entire system and an IATF 16949 certificate that covers only the automotive related parts. If it's done by one audit team the 16949 audit days would be calculated per the automotive rules and additional time would be added for the non-automotive.

That's it right there. We went for years with only QS and TS as those customers where really driving the certification. Then CAT dropped out of the "automotive" scheme and our applicable products where cut by half. So the auditor comes it and focuses on the handful of automotive parts we have. Unfortunately because of our head count he has to be ther for 1.5 to 2.5 days when he could do it in a few hours.
