Guys, say what you will. ISO9001 is a complete and total joke. Many make this into so much more than it has to be. QM's hide behind the BS which allows them to seem important. I cannot begin to tell you what kind of horse.... this is for a realistic standpoint.

Lets see, first you pay the RO to come into you facility and you really expect them to fail you? Come on! This entire process is complete pig pile. This is one of the biggest jokes to ever take place in the US marketplace. Heres to you China! Even your chicken feet are registared to the ISO9001:2008 standards! :topic:

Lots of people feel as you do - that it's a dog and pony show. And for too many people that's true.

ISO standards are just documents that provide a framework for management systems. What you get out of it is just about equal to what you put into it. That is, ISO itself doesn't provide anything except guidance. Take it or leave it, make it so-so or make it great. Do as you will with it.

In the beginning, middle and end it's not about the standard. It's about us and the people around us who are trying to do a good job so our customers will be happy and we'll be successful. Boom, that's it.

P.S. I have heard chicken feet are a pretty serious business in China.

I would suspect of some sort of side effect of eating ISO 9001-2008 certified chicken feet

:nope:
If you do not apply common sense, common business sense along with the simple ways what ISO 9001 states ... then you are into some serious joking.

Hi,

I agree with both sides, I love my Job, and I think a Quality Management System is a good think to have if you live it, but how can it be a company has a ISo 9001 certificate, and all stuff I get delivered are scrap but certified (according EN 10204) to be ok, by an external certification body, that's what we get from India .

And for sure the following situation could be discussed, but it is some kind of weird: walking trough an oil quenching company certified according to ISo 14001, and must be aware of the oil on the floor all the time?
It doesn't match, and on a bad day in my job, I can really understand Jack.

But I also believe, that companies with a livng culture for quality (independend from the standard) are the leading companies in their business, because what we as consumer expect from most of the stuff we buy daily is a good quality!!

So lets start another week of work!!

I look at our certification the same as a membership to a gym. If I exercise a lot at that gym, I will get healthy and strong. It isn't the membership itself that makes me strong.

If I work within the parameters and guidlines laid down by ISO 9001, I will improve my QMS. The certificate in no way improves my system. I guess it's like so many things in life - it is what you make it.

Thanks for venting...but you haven't said anything meaningful.
  • I knew a teacher once who was not very good, so we'll write off education.
  • Met a professor who I thought was completely incompetent...guess there goes the universities.
  • Saw a Q Mgr. that was clearly not effective...so we'll dismiss the Quality profession.
  • Came across a calibration company that was a scam...so we'll have to ignore metrology.
  • We all criticize politicians, so clearly they are all crooks.
  • There was a CEO who lacked leadership, so they are not worthy of consideration...
  • Had a car once that was a lemon, so I guess I'll go back to walking...
How far should we take this little game of ranting? Every field can be scammed, and every situation has good and bad participants. (Otherwise, you probably would not have a job in this field, there would not be any.)

I think it is foolish to toss out whole categories because you saw some bad examples. It truly is what you make of it, as has already been said.

To go along with what Silentrunning said:

I have 3 clients who developed an ISO 9001 based QMS. They had no intention of being registered. They developed it to establish discipline to remove variation from their processes. Could they have used a different tool? Of course, but why, when ISO 9001 provides what you need?

When I work with a company, I do not focus on registration. I focus on developing a QMS that will improve the organization. If we do that correctly (using ISO 9001 as a tool), then registration will be easy.

I will agree that in some cases individual registrations may be a joke, but if you take ISO 9001 (Or 16949, or 13485, etc.) it seriously and try to apply it, as it was intended, it WILL help the organization.
