Does anyone has experience with determining if Lubricants and Greases are Food Grade?

Audit finding:
There was no record on file to show that Lubricants and Greases used inside the plant were food grade.

I requested for a food grade certificate from our supplier but they can't provide one. I am looking for alternative to determine (in-house) if lubricants and greases are food grade.

I would appreciate any help.

Hi,

"Food Grade" is quite a fluid term. Its meaning depends on the context. What is the applicable regulatory territory? Maybe try consulting the applicable pharmacopeia.

Food grade lubricants are considered food-contact materials if used in food manufacturing. Your first step would be to ask the supplier for all ingredients in the lubricants. Then you check 21 CFR 178.3570 Lubricants with incidental food contact for the status of each ingredient. 21 CFR 178 is for processing aid etc so there may be other sections applicable.

Second part: They must be manufactured under food GMP.

The above is with the assumption that you are in US. :)

No, our company is based in the Philippines.

If I read you correctly, requirements do vary from country to country concerning the specification for Lubricants and Greases to be considered food grade.

Yes.

What was the audit's context? FDA inspection? Certification audit (to what)? Customer's audit (where is the customer located)? Philippines license or the equivalent? Etc.
