My guess is burnishing chips would probably look finer, like grinding debris versus discrete, uniform chips.

Yes, but, remember what we are talking about is the progress across the continuum from cutting to burnishing - with the intent to not make it all the way to burnishing....but to change the tool prior to that condition. (Sometimes the tools are keep in a little too long, and pretty much just are burnishing!)

Yes, graphite chips are just dust.

That's what I recalled from my days in machined graphite aircraft jet engine parts - but I did not want to assume...
