Primary & Secondary Inspection Definitions - Incoming, In-process & Final Inspection

Hi,

I'm working on a system to define Primary & Secondary inspection criteria in Incoming, Inprocess & Final QC Inspection processes on the basis that:

A Primary Inspection is the point where a defect can be detected in the process, i.e. after this point the defect is unable to be detected. Examples of this could be visual inspection of a heat seal, Unit Final Test, PCBA Functional Test.

A Secondary Inspection is the inspection point where inspection is performed on a part, where the nonconformance can be detected during test in another inspection/test further on in the process.

I am trying to develop a more robust definition of Primary & Secondary Inspections but am having trouble finding any formal definitions.

Has anyone encountered this type of inspection classification and point me in the right direction to ensure that me definitions are correct?

Many Thanks

I've only heard them referred to as in-process or post-process inspections.

Re: Primary & Secondary Inspection Definitions - Incoming, In-process & Final Inspect

An further example would be where there is visual inspection on a part in Incoming Inspection (PCBA IPC-A-610), failure to detect the nonconformance could be caught further in the process as part of a 100% test (PCBA Functional or a Subassembly Test). In this instance the primary inspection would be at the PCBA Test and the secondary would be the visual inspection at Incoming Inspection.

PCBA delamination detected at Incoming Inspection per IPC-A-610 would be a Primary Inspection as the delamination would not be detected at Functional Test

What's the purpose for defining "primary" and "secondary" inspections?
