IS/TS 16949 Initial Cert. Audit - placed on 3rd party containment with Customer

If a company is in the process of obtaining TS certification for the first time and they are placed on 3rd party containment by their customer (not one of the big 3), can this company still audit as scheduled or will they have to notify the Registrar that they are on 3rd party containment and cancel the upcoming initial audit?

Here's my take on this situation. The containment action is a result of a customer complaint. The customer has requested corrective action. Unless these issues have been resolved, you can NOT be recommended for certification. In fact, any nonconformities must be closed out before certification will be granted.

I agree with Stijloor. Containment may be considered to be a major nonconformity, and certification can't be granted until corrective actions have been taken and, in some cases, it has been lifted. In some cases, the stage 1 audit can proceed, and in some cases it would need to be postponed.

For examples see the IAOB Clarification of the Impact of Customer Special Status Conditions. This document lists the actions required specifically for Chrysler, Ford, and GM but could be considered as precedence for other automotive customers as well.
