Design FMEA (DFMEA) required on all products and their parts?

i a in need of conducting DFMEA for an ACmotor....
my doubt is...is that required to approach any company...
is that required DFMEA for every parts of AC motor..

Re: How to fill s/c and c/c in DFMEA (Design FMEA)?

A Design FMEA is a good approach for any company with design control, but it is only a requirement where a customer or a regulatory agency specifically states that it is a requirement.

Again, it is not required for every part of a product unless stated so by a customer or regulatory agency. If it is not required, you may perform the DFMEA on a preliminary risk assessment basis.

Usually DFMEAs are done on the assembly but you consider component/part failures (If this part fails, what are the consequences to the operation of the assembly).

You should be able to get DFMEAs for the individual component parts from the manufacturers of the parts themselves.

Do you design the product? If so design FMEAs are usually performed after the product has been designed but the drawing has not been issued.

If your company does not design the product, then the design FMEA is a responsibility of the design group and not the manufacturing group. A manufacturing group can and should develop a process FMEA prior to manufacturing the product. After the product has been produced, the development of a process FMEA is more for show than go.

The design FMEA process should be initiated before the actual design activities take place, just as the PFMEA should be initiated before production. The whole idea is to anticipate design issues as far as possible before the designing begins. I've seen several cases where prospective products got scuttled during the design phase, and such scuttling (and all of the expense) could have and should have been prevented by a conscientious DFMEA process.

Everyone who's involved in product development should be aware of the groupthink phenomenon known as the Wikipedia reference-linkAbilene paradox. There are too many times when a group of people sitting around a table will nod their heads in agreement when they have serious misgivings about the project at hand. DFMEA should represent an opportunity to save money by abandoning ill-fated projects before too much money is spent on discovering the bloody obvious.

To add to the reasons as to why the DFMEA should be upfront (before prints) is that it should affect or help drive the prints themselves.

ie: Are the parts symmetrical and can thus be flipped? If that’s bad – design the part so it won’t fit when reversed. Will your design have a liquid dip based coating (e-coat, a-coat)? If so do you need drain holes? Is it a complicated welding? Add location holes to aid mfg in aligning all the parts prior to weld. Could they flip it…design the location holes with different diameters

One of my pet peeves since it is often overlooked: Have them read any and all specifications they are going to put on the print and include their important items as well in the DFMEA. NOT just slap a spec on because it was on another print. They need to know what it is calling for.

Ie: Aluminum casting porosity spec per E505 calls out that the acceptable porosity and shrinkage levels are defined on the print. How many times have we seen a print ref a spec and then not define what it is about the spec they want to call good?

If a good job is done, it should then be ready to feed the PFMEA (process) without items still hanging open.
