OK, this has probably been done to death before but cant find a relevant thread.

How do YOU measure the effectiveness of your QMS?

This is not a how to, question but what do YOU see as your key measures of effectiveness?

In the first place, if a QMS does not show off in Quality results(including Quality Cost Delivery) such as Warranty, Customer, Internal rejections, it's not worth having it. The direct measure of these indicators would reflect the effectiveness.

It can't be isolated to one area. For example, the profit of the organization is high but whose employees are disintegrating isn't effective at all.

Hi Chrissie.

This is a very interesting topics overall.

I think that there could be several indicators ( KPI) to measure
Effectiveness and Health of QMS, depending on organization's processes as well as Policy/quality objectives:

- Number of major non conformities coming from second/third parts audit
- Customer satisfaction improvement
- Confirmed certification from Registrar
- Obtain new certifications to improve your business
- Increasing the number of orders from Customers
- Cost reduction improvement ( including cost of poor quality)
- Time to market reduction for new products
- Zero defects achievement
- Compliance to law and regulation
-…...

Most importantly:

Making (more) money.

If the QMS does not contribute to the profitability of the company, why do it?

Effectiveness is a too limited view. It should include efficiency and suitability.

Chrissie
1. Are people happy to work
2. Is there a system to do anything (any required thing) in the organization
3. If something goes wrong, is it quickly identified and permanently corrected.

If your answer is YES to all the three, then be happy that you have an effective QMS

Re: How do you measure the Effectiveness of a QMS

I measure the results compared to the goals for the KPI defined for the organization. If all groups are meeting the KPI targets including efficency then I must assume that we have effective and efficent operations. Which, I think is the goal of a QMS.

I also measure (not formally or tracked for trends) based on how many times I am in a meeting and question regarding some task or operation which should be defined in somewhere in the QMS leads to confusion. If the owners of the procedures are unclear on a point in the process I am assuming that it is not very well defined.

As Deming said, "If you can't describe what you are doing as a process then you don't know what you are doing".

That is just the way I do it.

Right on - But it isn't just THAT we make more money but HOW....

There are many ways to make more money in the short run but kill off the company in the long haul.

Therefore I would suggest that the best way to measure the QMS is by the balancing act of making money and long term planning.

"Are planned results being achieved?"....this aplies to everything controlled/effected by the QMS

Any old list, like those above and those to come below, can be summed up with this question.

In most areas yes, but one of the site managers does not see a correlation between the good KPIs and the QMS/Internal Audits etc dooooooooooh I know it sounds unbelievable but it is still getting through that mentality that Quality is in everything we do and not an add on. Some of our senior management team has grasped it and some not.
